the only way to control ibs is diet.
ibs is not cureable, so don’t bother with wasting body effort or your wallet with pills or meds.

all you can do, is eat what you can digest.
cut out all heavy, strong-flavoured or spicey foods.
eat mainly raw vegies and fruit and small amounts of meat and carbs.

if your ibs is real nasty, go on JUST raw salads and vegies and fruits for a week, then slowly add the meat and carbs.

best of luck man, i know it’s nasty as I’ve got it too.
If i get worked up, it plays up, so i have to keep a tab on my moods as well.
my doc suggested meds and anti-depressants (i’m not depressed). so i went to a naturopath and they said try the diet.
i went on the diet in 2001 and am still in control of my ibs.

    xx

for the most part I agree with the answer above about eating raw salads. I do want to add that drinking ALOT of water and very little caffeine will also help. I also find jogging regularly gives me a lot of relief.

stress is a major contributor for ibs. You could try meditation/hypnosis techniques for this.

    Look at for more information

I agree with what was said above, plus ginger, Acidophilus, Garden of Life “perfect food”, and digestive enzymes.

Make sure the enzymes are vegetarian based.

Also, skip the dairy. It’s AWFUL for you! Check out

I absolutely agree with the first two answers and I second everything they said. Also, I’d add that you likely need to cut dairy out of your diet.
When I did that, my problems with IBS settled down significantly. Mood still does affect it and probably always will, but not nearly to the degree it used to.
However, be warned, when you do cut dairy completely out of your diet and then decide that you just have to have an ice cream cone, you will regret it for days!

I took a trip overseas and ended up with intestinal parasites. My HMO did not discover this fact because they were worthless, cheap bastards. They didn’t want to run any exams because it costs money to do so. The public hospital didn’t want to see me because I was insured. I know, I should have simply lied to the public health hospital!

At any rate, once I had discovered the parasites on my own, the doctor was able to make a *diagnosis*. Did you know that only a physician can make a diagnosis? Also, most physicians aren’t very good at it. That’s why they prescribe medication. To mask the symptoms of whatever it is that ails you.

IBS = “I b.s.” If you want to understand IBS, google “IBS / trashcan diagnosis”, as it is a “catch all” diagnosis, if you still want to call it that. If they do not know what is the matter with you and they do not have the time or energy or inclination to figure out what is wrong with you, then you invariably have IBS…

Fortunately, I was able to overcome my “IBS”, my “motility disorder”, my rampant “food allergies” and the accompanying “anxiety and depression”. What I loved the best was when the gang of incompetents decided to play the game this way, “Perhaps, you anxiety and depression are CAUSING your IBS… hmmm.”

Oh, yeah. So. Do you want to know how I was cured? I picked up a book on detoxification after a woman I had been seeing recommended a detox kit. She found the relationship too cumbersome, with my health issues and all. But obviously, she was a blessing.

My physician was very upset by the fact that I went outside of the HMO. He was not happy to see me well. Let me state that again. My physician was UPSET after I announced to him that I was well. He had tried to persuade me on several occasions in the past to simply accept the idea that “I b.s.” was an incurable disease. I found his reaction quite interesting. I next set up an appointment to visit the psychiatric department to let them know that, with my illness gone, my depression had lifted. I used to try a little this and a little that for a couple of weeks at a time. I was desperate. But, no antidepressant could cure gut problems and it was a mistake in my case to ever attempt using them because, when I met the shrink, and I had never seen him before, he already knew what I had come to say. I suppose my medical doctor had spoken to him. So, the first thing he did was insult me. Oh, yes. He wasn’t happy that I had gone outside of the HMO. I kid you not. I explained to him how it was that I had gotten well, what with my former girl friend explaining to me that I needed to purchase a detox kit. And the shrink smirked and began laughing in my face. Oh, yes. They say that in the past two years alone, the pharmaceutical industry has spent nearly $1 billion dollars lobbying congress. I hope they go the way of the banking system, straight to hell.

I used to date a woman who worked for a drug company when she was much younger. She explained to me that most of the drug company’s competitors also hired young women. And all of them were interested in dating and, eventually marrying a doctor. Oh, my! Drug sales aren’t the only thing rising in doctor’s offices.

Anyhow, I was healed and made well by a very cheap drug. And I got rid of my IBS in three weeks. Which, as I later learned, is quite common. And I have spoken with many people. Average people. People with common sense and no vested economic interest in my health outcome. What worked for me was this: I initially tried colon hydrotherapy. I hated the idea. But I found that it was time that I took control of my health care. I took the plunge. My gut felt much better immediately afterward. As if it had been held in a state of tension for years and was now stretching and yawning like a well fed kitten.

After that experience, I realized that alternative medicine, holistic medicine, integrative medicine, herbal medicine and the like were not simply scams intended to take my money. I realized that I had been wrong to have ever thought so and that the real buffoons were all working for my HMO.

Up next on the agenda was a visit to a private, alternative health clinic near a wealthy suburb in California. It is funny, but a number of these clinics are situated near wealthy communities such as Palos Verdes, Beverly Hills and Marin County. Places where people don’t have time to sit around and mope over gastrointestinal illness. It would simply be too inconvenient for their lifestyle and work habit.

Funny thing, again: The alternative health clinics do not charge you very much at all. And if they can solve your health problem, then for God’s sake, why would anyone want to keep visiting some other place where they are simply told that they will remain ill. Stay here, and stay sick. Go there, and be well. Simple choice? You’d think so. Unfortunately, it can take many people months, years and decades to get off the pot, no pun intended.

The alt. health clinic physician had a long list of tests that I could take in the area in which I was interested in examining. My HMO physician, in contrast, was adament that I should not pursue any tests in this area. And all I wanted to know about was the bacterial and yeast composition of my stool. By the time I got to the alternative health clinic, that point was mute. I already knew what I wanted and I had already formed my argument. What I tried was mycostatin. It came out of their refrigerator and it was an extremely fine powder, which is the only thing I wanted. Without going into the reasons, I did not want it in hard tablets and I did not want a sweet, sticky liquid suspension. Think about it.

The hydrotherapist had already explained to me the importance of food combinations and also the importance of going on an anti-candida diet. I followed their recommendations while taking the mycostatin. In 3 weeks my condition had improved by a remarkable 85%. I was able to kiss my food allergies goodbye. And for the first time in many, many years, I was able to begin eating fruit, drinking coffee, enjoying vegetables and grain cereals, etc. I was able to enjoy food again. Breakfast was no longer a nightmare that I woke up to.

And do you know what? After having spoken to my HMO physician and their wack job psychiatrist, I next decided to visit their gastroenterologist. Just for fun, mind you. I had to ask him if he had ever heard of nystatin, which is the generic name for mycostatin. He had not. Next, I asked him to look up nystatin on his computer. That he did. And would you know, my HMO’s computer database described nystatin as indicated in the treatment of IBS? What a zinger!

A word of advise: If you sue your HMO, please be advised that they will alter your medical record. Documents of office visits will simply disappear. Their attorney will try to portray you in the worst possible light. Physicians will rally around the team. They all are partners in the enterprise, afterall. And you will not look so good. The medical expert they hire on their behalf will say anything to discredit you. And you will be surprised to find that their *expert* doesn’t seem to have published anything that you can find. Which is a brilliant strategy for a professional expert, when you stop and think about it.

I have been well for three years. I hope that you get well, too. And soon. Suing overworked, disinterested and incompetent physicians isn’t generally worth the bother. There is widespread fraud in the medical profession. It makes the Catholic Church look like it’s being run by choir boys, in way of comparison. If you would like to really get sick to your stomachs, please feel free to visit your local community law library and hit the sections on medical fraud and medical malpractice.

I’d say your best OTC help for IBS is a prebiotic soluble fiber supplement like Tummy Fiber (for diarrhea or constipation), a probiotic (for bloating and diarrhea/constipation), peppermint oil capsules with fennel oil (for abdominal pain and bloating).

For dietary help, I’d have to say the recommendations above to eat only raw veggies and meat would simply kill me. With IBS you have to be very careful with insoluble fiber, which is in raw veggies and bran. You want to base your meals on soluble fiber, found in foods like oatmeal, pasta, and root veggies.

There is great IBS diet info here http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/ that will really help all symptoms.

    Best,
    H
