As Dr Hariram says - diet can play a role. However look at the work of Professor Peter Whorwell at the Gastroenterology Department at Manchester University - he has been having 705 to 80% long term success rate with gut directed hypnotherapy for chronic IBS.
Most interesting is that there is entire seperate nervous system - indeed a "second brain" running the digestive system. The Enteric Nervous System is about 1% the size of the brain with 10 billion neurons and a similar range of neurotransmitters to the brain. Also can function independantly of the Central Nervous System.... quite astonishing

Diet is very important in IBS but please consider this. After a successful course of hypnotherapy,an IBS patient is able to eat all foods that were previously triggers. How is that possible? All the hypnotist does is talk to you while you are asleep. Hypnotists remove negative messages from your subconscious mind and replace them with positive ones. There is no magic in this. The negative belief in your subconscious mind developed over time. If you believe there is no cure and you just have to live with it, that is exactly what you get, a long life fighting for control over your IBS symptoms. The hypnotist changes your belief system and hence the positive results. Why can't you do this yourself? Along with dietary control etc, create hope and expectation for a better future with your IBS. Picture in your mind a day you will control your IBS symptoms. If you genuine believe, things start to happen.
                                     Dr.Phil Hariram.
