Foods That Relieve Constipation
David March 12th, 2010
As you probably already know, constipation is classified as a person that only has three bowel movements or fewer in a week. Their stool is hard and dry and sometimes it can be painful to pass. You also may feel bloated, clogged up, and full.
You might hear people tell you that it’s healthy to have a bowel movement at least once a day. While that may be true for some people there actually is no “right” number of bowel movements a typical person should have. Everybody is different and just needs to figure out your body’s normal number of bowel movements. There are many factors that determine this such as the type of food you eat, how much you exercise, how stressful your life is, etc.
At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. In most cases, it lasts for a short time and is not serious. When you understand what causes constipation, you can take steps to prevent it. If you have IBS with constipation you probably already know how important fiber-rich foods are to your comfort.
The major cause of constipation is unhealthy eating habits and you’d be surprised how quickly you’d have a bowel movement after changing your diet for a few days. Fiber foods are also important in helping to reduce the cholesterol levels in the body. They are not easily digestible by the intestinal tract hence putting them in the position of bulk forming enhancers and enable the feces to pass easily.
If you don’t already include foods like bran, wheat, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your daily diet it’s time to start now. In short, all high fiber foods are part of the foods that relieve constipation.
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends you eat 20-35 grams of fiber a day but in order for a high-fiber eating plan to work its magic, you have to do three things:
- Reach the higher-fiber target (of 20-35 grams of fiber a day) almost every day.
- Spread your high-fiber foods throughout the day so it works better on your bowels.
- Drink plenty of water and other non caffeinated, noncaloric liquids/beverages throughout the day as well. Fiber works better in the intestines if there is plenty of water to go with it.
For me, I found my solution by learning from someone else who has lived with constipation for many years. She travels three times a month (and probably just like you and I), her constipation was worse on the road. After reading her step-by-step e-book and learning her techniques, I was able to prevent my constipation in the future. I’ll include a picture and link to her e-book below if you’re interested in getting a copy.
Now I usually start the day by waking up and drinking a large glass of water and then eating a bowl of Raisin Bran or Fiber One. Just make sure to pick a cereal (or oatmeal) that has a lot of fiber and ideally low sugar. Look at the side of the box when you’re at the grocery store for the number of grams of fiber it contains. Having this for breakfast helps me have a bowel movement usually right after lunch or on a good day a few hours after breakfast. I also eat lots of green vegetables and drink green tea. The green tea helps in more than one way and is a natural way to help cleanse the body.
To help relieve constipation in the fastest and most painless way possible, try following some of these tips which have worked well for me:
- Change your diet and start eating more fiber on a daily basis. I’m not asking you to drop all junk food and just eat spinach but instead try something like a bowl of high fiber cereal in the morning, 1 to 2 slices of whole-grain bread with peanut butter & a banana for lunch, and steamed vegetables with brown rice and a meat dish.
- Drink water regularly and other liquids such as fruit and vegetable juices and clear soups. At least 6 glasses of water a day would be very great and therapeutic. Large amounts of water aids quick digestion and enables easier bowel movement.
- Get regular exercise which will help your digestive system stay active and healthy. You don’t need to become a great athlete. A 20 to 30 minute walk every day may help. I personally go to the gym 2-3 times a week which also helps me reduce stress.
- Add fiber supplements to your daily intake. Products like Fiber Choice, Metamucil, Konsyl, FiberCon, or anything basically containing psyllium husk powder will do the trick. You may get gas the first couple of days while your body gets used to the additional fiber but give it a week and the gas will pass (no pun intended).
I hope these tips help you as they’ve certainly helped me with my constipation and diarrhea as well. Bulking up your stool by eating fiber really helps push out and clean your bowels so besides feeling better, it’s a healthy way to live.
If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them below. As you can see, I’ve added direct links to the fiber supplement products I mentioned above. You can order them from Amazon.com without having to make an embarrassing trip to the grocery!
Oh, and that constipation e-book I was talking about before….it’s well worth buying a copy. I would’ve paid $100 bucks for it (or more) if I knew about it sooner. It really changed my daily lifestyle and for only $30, it was a steal. When it comes to my health, I don’t like putting things off and when you can instantly download a book online, it can save you from an embarrassing in-person purchase.

These are great tips David! I’ve had trouble going #2 and plan on trying to eat more fiber in the mornings like you do. Raisin Bran is a good idea but I think it has too much sugar for me so I’ll try Fiber One or another one.
I also recommend drinking prune juice. It’s not great tasting but it does help me move things down my system. Great blog and keep up the posts!

Is the product Benefiber by Novartis OK? I just purchased it and noticed it didn’t contain psyllium husk powder? Also, is decaf tea OK? I was cautioned to stay away from it. I’ve just started eating again after 3 days and had a bowl of westen corn chowder and don’t feel so great. Should I avoid soup? I’m trying to stick to a liquid diet and drink a lot of water to get some relief.
Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you
i actually am writing because im only 21 and ive been dealing with severe constipation since i was a kid and am actually on this website because im having problems as we speak…Im also almost 9 months pregnant and my doctors have tried everything to keep me from getting backed up…It happened a few months ago and was the worst ive ever had it and htey tried everything they could think of to get my system working and finally after alot of water and about 6 or 7 different medicines it worked, they were mostly worried all the pushing was going to put me into premature labor, i havent really had alot of problems since until now..I am not regular when it comes to that at all, i only go a couple times a week and its always been like that and no matter what i do it is always hard to go and always painful…The best thing ive found that helps me is eating prunes on a regular basis but when i forget to eat them as i did this week , I wont go because I wont even get the urge..So I realized yesterday I hadnt even gone in about a week so I ate some prunes and have been trying to drink water as much as i hate it and instantly the urge to go is back but my problem is that I know how much it is going to hurt for the fact that it has been about a week or maybe a little over and my anxiety about the pain will not let me succeed in going…It is really painful right now and I need some advice on what to do or something that will soften it up because Im so pregnant im really scared if i dont find something to help i will go into labor and I just want to be able to sit adn walk around and even sleep comfortably…Can someone please help…
try milk of magnesia and drink alot of water. Also, add metamucil to your daily diet to give you fiber.
I’ve suffered from IBS for about 15 years. I’m 63 years old. At the risk of jinxing the cessation of my “spastic colon” symptoms, that I have been experiencing for the last 6 months, I offer my anecdotal experience. I have been buying dried/chopped ginger online & brewing (cooking actually) a tea w/ it. I had read that it aided the peristalsis in the large intestine. I drink a large cup of my ginger tea hot in the morning after my fiber drink (Citrucel & water). I also drink some once in awhile before or after a large uncomfortable meal. My elimination problem was a combo of constipation & quasi-diarrhea. I would evacuate from 3-6 times within the 1st hour or so of waking. Now I’m a regular Joe. I also follow the ginger tea w/ a cup of yogurt.
My ginger tea recipe is as follows: I grind 1/8 of a cup of the dried/chopped ginger in a coffee grinder. I take a quart pyrex measuring cup & fill w/ water to about 3/4 inch below the pouring spout, cover w/ small plate & heat it to a boil in the microwave (9min. & 33 sec. for my unit, but it varies). Remove carefully & stir carefully with a small whisk because microwave heated water will erupt violently if handled carelessly. I stir in the ground ginger & replace in the microwave & heat on 10% power for 15 minutes. Cool, pour into one liter/quart Nalgene container, fill to top w/ water & refrigerate.
That’s it, ginger tea & yogurt. I can’t be absolutely certain that this is what is giving me relief, but I’m going to keep it up. I have always eaten a good diet, including fiber from oatmeal & whole wheat breads etc., fairly low fat, lotsa veggies & fruit; but this is the 1st relief I’ve had in about 15 years from the bloating, cramping, etc. Hope this helps someone.

Hi
I am a new IBS sufferer and found the blog very helpful. Thank you.
I do not find that levsen helps the spasms in my colon. Any other suggestions would
be very welcome.
Many thanks.
Eating mainly soluble fiber and following a vegan diet works wonder for IBS. Here’s a link http://www.helpforibs.com
It’s helps so much since I’ve had IBS for several years now. Healthy living is the key.
High fiber foods can reduce the risk from constipation, hemorrhoids, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, obesity, colon cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
prunes definately work!!!!!
Hi,
This is a good article, but I have one issue with it, on your suggestions, you recommend foods like bananas and rice.
I was always told – to stop diarrhea and constipate you, use the BRAT method:
Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast
How does this weigh in with your suggestions?
Nothing will help my severe IBS c.
Thanks for these great tips. I have definitely found that drinking a lot of water helps immensely.
Fennel, chamomile, mint is good for IBS . It helps me somewhat since my IBS is very extreme.
I’ve had IBS – C for the past five years. My website chronicles all of the different things I’ve tried to cure it. Natural methods. No medication.
Today, I’m a high-raw, high probiotic, gluten-free, sugar-free, caffeine-free vegan. Recently, I’ve started staying away from hard nuts, and getting my protein from soy and seeds.
I take psyllium every day. I also take digestive enzymes and artichoke compound tincture before every meal. I eat extremely small meals. In between meals, if I get hungry, I drink a chia seed shake or coconut water. Liquid protein snacks work the best for me.
Five years of elimination diets have brought me to this point. But I can honestly say that it works, and I feel great. I hope this helps!
Hi David,
Very good article and nice site.
Could you please contact me regarding a potential connection.
Thanks,
Danny
Decaf green tea is the only thing that has made my IBS better. It is a true life saver for me. I have about half a cup first thing in the morning and then have breakfast and then drink the remainder of the cup. I have a few more cups throughout my day including after dinner. Try it!
Nice tips and a very informative article. I’m not a regular coffee drinker but sometimes it works wonders for me when I’m constipated, does anyone experience the same benefits for constipation with coffee?
Try Regularity Capsules from http://www.rxnature.com. I don’t know what I would do if I have not discovered it about 1.5 years ago. Two friends of mine also take Regularity Capsules now (after I recommended in to them), and they would surely sing their names under this post. Great product that works!
Hi Linda,
I have been suffering with IBS-c for about 6 years now and I tried everything from fiber supplements to laxatives to even miracle products from the websites. The product you listed Regularity Capsules look very interesting. I checked out the website; however, I could not find the ingredients of this product. Would you be able to provide a list of what exactly is in this product?
Meat and animal products won’t help. They are filled with crap antibiotics, pus, blood, hormones.
Hi there! Would like to contact you about your site but can’t find any contact details… is it possible you could email me back if you get a moment (ash.davis@gmail.com) – Thanks!
My son also suffers from IBS diarrhea not constipation. It really helped him to change to a gluten free and dairy free diet. He had some other food issues too that we have eliminated. His IBS is so much better now that he has been on the diet. I’m glad you have found some relief from your symptoms.
A lot of fibers do not help me much, such as bran or acacia fiber. There is a big market for the regularity yogurt foods such as Activia or Danactive. Yogurt seems to cause sinus problems for me though. It can be pretty tough to find something that works.
i dont get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fresh fruit!!
Agree.
Eating habit really contributes a lot in constipation. it is very important to include more fibre in each meals. People now are taking less fibre, but more and more meat. This is totally unhealthy to us and easily cause chronic diseases that may come out years later. Especially important for kids to follow the high fibre diet.
Constipation is caused by many factors. It may be cause by diet, change in routine like travel, medications that you are taking, lack of exercise, diseases or it may also be cause by age, pregnancy and aging and as simple as ignoring the urge to pass waste.
hi all!
Great blog.
I had a problem with IBS constipation for 2 years. I found that whole grain foods such as: oats, muesli, wheat. Sunflower and sesame seeds, almonds, vegetables(greens). Green tea, lots of water(8 cups/day minimum). Regular excersice. These are all things that helps me. Try and stay away from any tipes of animal meat or milk,cheese,ice-cream. These days all of them have hormones in them. Hope it helps!
Great tips, consider adding probiotics not only do they help with constipation but with IBS
my family doesnt get constipation and i see so many ppl suffer from it around. however i found a lot of sites posting the same old information that not very helpfull. i see the problem in their diet they think as long as they eat fruits and bread they are great.from beginning they eat very often low quality food like chippest bread and milk that nobody think what are made from. or worst they eat junk food, they rarely consider soup for their meal or cooked from scratch food. its does take time but i would rather pay more money for better food and spend time for cooking than pay medical bills.i work with kids and see this problem all the time their parents simply doesnt cook for them, they give them sandwich from yearly age, kids never see any puree food or soup, they eat as rule for dinner pasta or chillis. funny wonder how would adult feel with pasta and bread diet but unfortunatelly parents say that they are to busy and just put kids on medication.
There have been a few reports of Manuka Honey helping IBS-C. This honey is produced by bees that collect nectar from the Manuka flower found in New Zealand. There is some science basis to this too. It is proven to have an effect on some bacteria and promotes wound healing. It has been used in many medical problems including ulcers, indigestion, gastroenteritis, wounds, pressure sores and much more. Its a natural product that may help.
I suffer from IBS and I can’t begin to explain how much the COCO Bidet has helped me out. It cleanses me with warm water and even has an air dryer. It has a massage feature that helps with constipation. And it even has a heated seat. I love this thing you can them out at http://www.cocobidet.com
Good information. Fruit and cereal have especially worked for me. Just another reason to eat healthy!
Try a cup of hot or boiling water first thing in the morning before you eat anything. When I was pregnant this was a big help for me. My secretary gave me this advice and it helps. Include, of course, the high fiber and the water.
I too suffered from Constapation. Now I want to help others. As mine went on for 4 years. Doctors tried it all. Now I am Bloat free, constapation free, UTI free.
I was even told I only had one antibiotic left to treat my urinary tract infection. I had sever bloating, by the end of the day a dress size or 2 up. Terrible. Now back to what the doctors dont tell you. How a simple eating right foods whith what can help fix a few problems.

Very good site. I stumbled across your blog looking for people who suffer from IBS like myself as I am always looking for more information. I suffer from IBS-D, and colitis. I have tried all the dietary changes but nothing has seemed to work for me because of having the dual diagnosis. Stuck between a rock and a hard place sometimes.
Ambriel, why dont you try the 4 day Trial it is free at http://1fixonly.blogspot.com/
We all eat wrong food combinations.I tried the 4 day trial and then grabed the booklet cause I felt great after 4 days.
Was really a change of life for me. Not to be rude but when i did go to the toilet it was not enough until I noticed a difference on the free trial. Then I bought the Supershield Probiotics( they really differ from the chemist brands) and what a difference. Not only do I not have no more problem in that area I have no idigestion anymore either. Colitis reading is also on there.
You must not be a severe case because IBS C is not supposed to be eating grains and bran.
IBS C needs SOLUBLE fiber, not insoluble. A salad would consist of mostly insoluble fiber which absorbs water out of your gut which makes constipation worse.
Additionally, it is well known that brown rice and wheat bread have higher insoluble fiber content than does white rice. You really need to do some research and specify what exactly your condition is because if people, like myself, went by your advice, we’d end up in the ER.
If you want fiber then eat beans! They are very high in fiber and top the World’s Healthiest Foods rich in Dietary Fiber. There are a lot of cures and home remedies that provide relief.
Well all I can say is that alot of things changed for me after getting a free 4 day trial of food combinations then i just had to buy the book and it has such yummy recipes in it.
http://1fixonly.blogspot.com
The probiotics they have are just the best. Here is a list of there ingredients which by far beat any other thing I have ever tried
Bacillus coagulans – assists in lactic acid production; very hearty bacteria
Bifidobacteria infanits – helps inhibit e. coli, protects against gastroenteritis and treats IBS
Bifidobacteria lactis – inhibits growth of harmful bacteria and destroys pathogens
Bifidobacteris longum – aids in prevention of GI problems
Bifidobacterium bifidum – destroys pathogens, naturally found in large intestine
Lactobacillus acidophilus – resists heat and antibiotics, friendliest flora of all
Lactobacillius casei – improves digestion, reduces lactose intolerance and constipation
Lactobacillius planetarium – destroys pathogens, helps to produce beneficial amino acids
Lactobacillius rhamnosus – superior ability to treat GI disorders (especially diarrhea), immune system enhancer
Lactobacillius salivarius – strengthens immune system and fights intestinal disorders
Streptococcis thermophilus – helps prevent lactose intolerance, used in production of yogurt
Bifidobacteris breve – treats IBS, prevents rotavirus induced diarrhea and strengthens immune system
Lactobacillius bulgaricus – shown anti-tumor properties, used in production of yogurt
It also includes Fructooligosaccharides(FOS) which is a Prebiotic that helps feed the Probiotics and assists in delivery and absorption
I have had IBS for 15 years and unfortunatley have tried all of this and more its a continuing battle which i will never win, I am unlucky and cannot eat Fibre which rules a lot of things out youve gave great advice and I hope it works for people. if anyone wants to check out my blog IBS is a feature of my ongoing battle and more.
thanks
There is a great article in Woman’s Own this week about IBS http://www.whiterosepr.co.uk/IntestAid.pdf
and I’ve successfully tried IntestAid….see http://www.probiohealthcare.com for more information,
thanks
Paula is right. I think what a lot of people with constipation or IBS-C don’t realize is that while all of these companies tell you to eat fiber, it seems to do more harm than good to a lot of people because they cannot digest it and pass it, just plugging them up even more. It is about the most uncomfortable feeling. I just tried NuTummy available at http://www.nutummy.com, and it has seemed to help quite a bit. Things seem to flow a lot more naturally after about 2 weeks of use. I honestly think that everyones body works differently, but I know its worked for me so I recommend it to give a try.
Yes well I can understand the fibre thing. I tried the fibre but it actually made me worse I was more bloated. Pain gee twisting of the bowel. Then out came in the news about how bad Bran can be for you. Fruit gee I just cannot seem to eat much fruit. But when I discovered http://1fixonly.blogspot.com I changed. I also tried the IBS Support capsuals from the chemist mad me bloat even more. Really there is a free trial for 4 days on this programme you can buy the supershield probiotics which i believe is the reason for my flat stomach now. But really menu with recipes is free and so easy. Actually you save money as well on it.
Great Tips, I recommend to eat dried fruits because it’s really helping.
Yes, same here.
I am IBS C and fiber and grains are big killer for me. The author may not really be IBS C, but just suffering from bouts of constipation or even a “spastic colon.”
It is really easy to get IBS C mixed up with other conditions.
Myth #1
Get more fiber
Myth #2
Eat grains
Myth #3
Take a probiotic – Yeah only do this if you want to make your condition irreversibly worse.
People don’t understand that this is literally a condition of the intestines and not just a result of a bad diet. Maybe IBS C can be helped with diet but for severe cases it is unlikely. In my case, I seem to be okay with steaks but beef kills me. Veggies bad, fruit good. Bread okay, pancakes, waffles, wheat bread okay, muffins and store bought cake bad… Lol..
Pasta and brown rice are the worse things, and I always feel the effects within a few hours. It’s like there’s a traffic light in my gut that flashes red and then there’s traffic jam, lol.
I’m so glad there are others out there because I keep reading the same BS on various websites. They are all wrong.
And no disrespect to the author. I wish I was you. I am glad I found your blog where others are like me, which is a relief.
Good luck to you and I’m glad you’re feeling better.
@Person, thanks. I actually found out what was causing my IBS. It turned out to be a gluten allergy! I cut out all wheat from my diet for two weeks and noticed a huge change in my health. It’s really amazing how much better I feel so I highly recommend you trying this as well. You have to be really careful because so many products contain wheat (specifically wheat flour). Bread, beer, cookies, some chips, pasta, etc.
~David
Some quick points:
(1) If you’re constipated DON’T consume MORE fibre.
You’re just building a bigger plug. Fibre PREVENTS
constipation, it is in no way, the cure.
(2) If you have IBS or similar issues, cut out ALL grains,
and dairy for a month (basically, go ‘Paleo’) and see
how good you feel after 30 days.
(3) No single food can ‘give’ you constipation.
The notion that a food can cause constipation is a myth.
It’s the ‘absence’ of the right food(s) which causes it.
(That being said, many medications, such as Paracetamol
(Panadol in some countries) can contribute to constipation.)
(4) Quinoa, although not ‘technically’ a grain, is still a
problem for most guts. It contains Saponins, which are
soap-like particles which punch holes in the gut wall.
Avoid this along all other grains (yes, rice too!) if you
want your intestines to function the way they’re designed to.
* To the person who wrote “seem to be okay with steaks but beef kills me”. You’ve got to be kidding right? Steak IS beef my friend. That’s the silliest, most ill-informed thing I’ve read for a long time. It’s like the fool who goes up to a bar and says “I hate Chardonnay but I LOVE Chablis!”. They’re THE SAME FREAKIN’ THING!
Splatty
Don’t be such a moron. You’re the ill informed. Obviously different cuts of beef are more tender than others. Seeing as short loins are softer whereas a ground or round is tougher, it is possible that some steaks are more easily consumed.
You’re the moron as far as I’m concerned.
By the way Splathead,
People who have IBS have different tolerances. So we’re not all the same.
Chablis is not the same as Chardonnay, you dumb a**.
Chablis is from a region and Chardonnay is a varietal of grape.
In case you try to say, “well they grow Chardonnay,” that’s bull **** too. Chablis is merely a reference to region and can include different varietals and is a blend.
What a dumb a** you are.
I too have been struggling for many years- most my life – with constipation. When I
was pregnant, I never ate as healthy. Not being able to handle materna vitamins, I
made sure I ate a variety of fruits & vegetables every day. Starting every morning with some high fibre cereal and my favorite fruit – a banana- I became sooooo constipated, It took a long time to eliminate one food at a time to discover the bananas were the culprit. Today 15 years later, I can handle a couple of small
slices or a single piece of banaba bread without too much discomfort but if I go overboard as I did last week , I really pay for it!! I once had a bout of diarrhea, and
for once I could enjoy some bananas, But after a couple of days, they got their revenge and I suffered. They seem to paralize my bowel, having no urge to go
whatsoever. So to those who believe that not a single food can constipate,
YOU’RE WRONG!!!!
Well with pro biotics they were actually making me feel worse. My stomach was so bloated taking them that I was a dress to 2 dress sizes bigger by the afternoon. Then I found a probiotic which is the best ever. I have actually noticed no bloating and my stomach seems much flatter. I love it. Found it at http://1fixonly.blogspot.com/
I too have suffered from constipation so bad that it gives me terrible hemorroids. For me, I have to follow a diet that’s low in fat and dairy, and be mindful of taking a fibre pill, which has been a lifesaver for me. The pain of the hemorrhoids I’ve experienced is enough to keep me sticking to the diet!

Hi to all;
After reading all above posts;i cant controlled to write something as i knew how it suffers.
Almost it took more than a year to remove my constipation & its horrible painful symptoms.
Still i want more effect because its not a decease of one or two.
I have gone through all the post, but none of us gave the good remedy of it.
Obvious everybody knows the reasons wrong diet, lack of fibres; insufficient water intake;etc etc.
BUT only because of above reasons; no one should suffer with IBS,Constipation;IBD.
IBD;Constipation;IBS,sticky stools are the symptoms of your damaged/weakened digestive systems.
Remedy of this symptoms really possible with medication with proper diet, exercise, yoga, breathing techniques & stress free routine.
Let me clear guys this not a decease which comes in a night and goes in a day as it is a process of months and finally it comes out with twins like IBS;IBD;Ulcers, Colitis, weight loss, fatigue, nervousness, foggy thinking, lack of concentration, low speech, lack of relationships etc etc!!!!! So where is the bug?
The main reason is only one & one & only one that is Digestive fire & intestine power which stores & processes food inside the stomach.
If the stomach fire is good enough to ripe the food then only will easily pass through intestinal pipes in the form of waste.Half riped food ingredient causes burning sensation;gases;pains & fullness; low voice etc etc.
If u want more help from me or any tips just let me know on nazim369@gmail.com.definitely i will post few tips with diet,exercise/yoga poses, breathing techniques, few herbal remedies to ease digestion & cleaning.
Health is wealth!!!!!!
I have suffered with constipation and “IBS” for 10 years since I was involved in a car accident and had loose fluid on my abdomen but then it was ignored and I have suffered ever since.
I have tried every medication – buscapan, spasmanol, movicol, fibregel, docustae, lactulose, VSL3 probiotic to name a few- and diet and nothing works, I’ve had scans, probes in my rectum, air pumped into my stomach, cameras in my stomache, biopsies of my bowel, and now going for a transit study to meausre my digestive system.
I could pass a stool myself at the most twice a week but then would still feel very full up as if I needed to go more. I would use laxatives which would give me diaharrea and then I would be more constipated than before.
My consultant has asked why I don’t use them on a regular basis and he should know this – but your bowel and rectum get used to the laxatives doing the work for you and it stops your muscles from working, which is what I think is happening now.
It has got to apoint now where I cannot go to the toilet at all. I went on Sunday because I used laxatives and the same the weekend before. If I hadnt have took them I wouldn’t have passed any type of stool natuarally for 3 weeks. I can’t take laxatives during the week because I am at work and the amount I need to take to get through my blockage is more than double the recommended amount.
The VSL3 and docusate mixture was supposed to help me go to the toilet and stop my excessive and very embarrassing flatulence. However the pumping stopped but the toilet didn’t happen so I was left feeling even more bloated.
It is okay to say eat fibre, exercise, drink water, but it doesn’t work. I eat salad, fruit and plenty of vege everyday, I go to the gym 5 times a week and I drink excess amounts of warm or cold water and peppermint tea and I am still left with a stomache that looks like I’m pregnant (I’m not) and struggle to fasten my clothes, when they are baggy everywhere except my stomache. My abdomen is round constanlty and hard to touch so it’s not fat.
Yesterday I have been give lactulose and movicol to try AGAIN and al I have done today is walk in and out of the office toilets so I can pass wind. I can hear it working in my bowel but it’s like having a plug in my bum and I can push because I have strained so much I have caused my back to hurt.
If anyone knows of any way possible to make me go to the toilet regularly I would be most grateful. I can’t go on like this.
Rachel,
The peppermint oil is good. I, like you, have been keeping pretty healthy with little effect. However, I don’t find the peppermint oil works as well.
I try to rotate the laxatives so as to keep my system on my toes.
Other tricks that I’ve learned to get things moving are
Sweet Orange Oil = few drops in my coffee can produce immediate results.
Licorice root which is natural and doesn’t leave you feeling like someone wrenched out your gut with a plumbers snake. If you look at a lot of store laxatives, many include licorice root so I never understood why we buy the pharmaceuticals and not the licorice root capsules in the helath section which cost $5 for 100 pills and produces the same results and feels better.
It feels like the licorice coats your inside. Too much can cause diahrea though, so be careful. You could take a licorice everyday though without worrying about side effects, however, like everything else you could build a tolerance. It can produce a bowel movement in a matter of hours depending on how backed up you are.
Have you tried the magnesium caltrate that’s sold for $1 in the med section? Although this will get you running to the bathroom though.
Also, you might consider some acupuncture. It sounds like you are close to being disabled.
Also, the bummer part is, to save money, you might just have to buy yourself an enema bag. Yeah, I know doesn’t sound fun. I did meet one person at the doc who confided that she just had to give herself an enema once a month. She said you get used to it though. Because of her, I bought mine but I still just stare at it woefully. lol.
i used to suffer from a really bad case of constipation. my case was diagnosed as IBS and i was instructed by my doctor to use laxatives for the rest of my life. it was so bad that i could only eat soup and boiled vegetables only. then after looking for natural ways to cure my constipation i found that simply changing my diet and eating habits i can easily cure my constipation. now i avoid eating processed foods and diary product especially before sleeping because i noticed that they can give me a bad case of constipation. i drink more fluids now, especially fresh juice that contains a lot of fiber and i walk daily. walking alone solves half of the problem in my case. i cant believe my doctor never pointed me to alternative ways to cure my constipation and told me to live on laxatives (which i did for three years) for the rest of my life and i am still in my twenties!!!!

Purchase essential oils in clove, cinnamon and black pepper and mix 2 to 3 drops of each in a tablespoon of carrier oil/olive oil is fine in a pinch and google stomach massage for constipation, works well, do it as often as needed and try to be relaxed, do each set of massage 3 times. I have chronic constipation since my hysterectomy 15 years ago and now have mega colon from using “natural laxatives”. Good luck, be patient, tons of water.
Hot water with fresh squeezed lemon in the morning before you eat and in the evening before bed. Works wonders!!! Trust me!
I am taking a special probiotic which is not like others. 100% I have tried so many and i actually get worse but these one I will tell the world are the best. It has also a special coating which dissolves in the intestines not in the stomach. Just take a look for yourself. I will not look elsewhere ever again.

I know have no bloating and can easily say that my body, my hair and nails all look much better. People are comenting and saying how good I look and how much weight I have lost.
Hahaa after so many years trying different probiotics and still the pain at the end of the day and increasing dress size by afternoon to now I am so overwhelmed. I live in australia and I order from america with no problem at all.
The issue I face is having frequent Fevers of Unknown Origin. So I am forever taking some kind of pain relievers, Tylenol and/or other medication. When these fevers break, I sweat so profusely that I often get dehydrated. I cannot replace the fluids fast enough. After about 2 days I become constipated. It’s very frustrating bur all your tips are great. I’ve struggled most of my life between 1 extreme to the other. Nothing like 3 weeks of loosey goosey to immediate constipation the next. I have had to completely change my diet, lost a bunch of weight and been doing great. Now these fevers (5 years off and on) have me back to square 1 again. Oh well, life goes on…hopefully without too much straining!
Oh dear… (takes deep breath).
Right. Here we go.

This is true. It’s also true that this has very little to do with digestion.
But this was not my point.
The point I was making was that to say “…I’m okay with steaks but beef kills me…” is silly, and this still stands. Steak IS beef. There’s simply no getting around it.
Now if you said something like: “I have trouble with tough cuts of beef, but not so much with good quality, melt-in-the-mouth cuts” then that would make a little more sense. But there are some cuts of beef which are more tender than some ‘steak cuts’. Blade steak for example (also known as chuck steak) is a VERY tough cut, and should always be braised/slow-cooked to break it down.
And I didn’t call you a moron. But for some reason, you seem to feel I did, and felt compelled to call me one.
Odd behaviour. Very odd.

Now I’m not going to stoop as low as you and call you a dumb-ass (you should have the courage to write the whole word) I will say that you’ve made a fool of yourself my friend.
The wine known as Chablis, form the Chablis region of Burgundy, is 100% Chardonnay.
Mâcon wines and the Côte d’Or whites are all also produced from 100% Chardonnay grapes.
The line: “I hate Chardonnay but I LOVE Chablis!” is a common in-joke in the wine trade.

I’m not so silly as to suggest those things aren’t happening to to you, as they clearly are, but I think perhaps you’re mixing up ‘correlation’ with ‘causality’. I would suggest that something ELSE is going on here. It’s not a ‘belief’ of mine that a food-stuff can’t cause constipation, it’s just scientific fact.
One known by doctors, nutritionists and scientists for many, many years.
My mum, when she was dying from lung cancer, ‘believed’ that rice (among many other foods) constipated her, much to the frustration of myself and the expert nutritionist from the Palliative Care Team at St. Vincent’s Hospital, as we were both trying desperately to get her to eat more to get some energy into her and limit the muscle-wasting she was suffering through.
Misunderstandings about how food and digestion work are serious things. Life-threatening things in many cases. THIS is why I’m passionate about this subject.

How do you know that? Have you ever been able to clearly see and read what went into a Chablis? Because everyone knows they are commonly mixed with Chenin Blanc, and still labeled Chablis.
Also, you’re initial comment was very rude, yet you act surprised?
Yes, rice does plug people up. White, long, and wild (which some say isn’t really rice), is especially bad for people because of the insoluble fiber.
Most people know that steak is beef. Your arrogance is what makes you condescend, and then you pretend as if you didn’t make any offence. You are a strange person.
Wow, Splathead, you just about killed her because rice does hurt people’s digestion. Yes, single foods, like foods high in wheat is especially bad for IBS sufferers. People are different and have different allergies, and allergies develop and change over time.
You really haven’t learned much, have you? So passionate, yet so ill informed. Frightened? I think that’s just you thinking the word “frightened” is the worse thing you can call someone. You probably think that because you, yourself, are frightened. That is probably you’re so arrogant.
I mean, you really do not see that you were being a jerk? Arrogant…
It is true because France does not require 100% Chardonnay grapes to be considered a TRUE Chablis. So, therefore, you cannot ever be sure and assert that it is 100% chardonnay.
That is why it is incorrect to interchange the names Chardonnay and Chablis. Even though wines abroad are named for their region and are prone to specific varietals, it does not truly reflect what grapes are actually used. You can never be sure.
You’d make a terrible somolier. Five years and didn’t learn anything. All hopped up on snobbery.
I’m glad you mentioned about taking psyllium husk powder as I have heard that it’s the main component to Metamucil and I’m going to see how it goes. Spreading your fiber meals throughout the day sounds like a good idea too.

“…How do you know that? Have you ever been able to clearly see and read what went into a Chablis? Because everyone knows they are commonly mixed with Chenin Blanc, and still labeled Chablis…”
Where in hell do you get that tripe from? And why do Americans (it’s a fair assumption) always insist on referring to people who give them info that clashes with their own notions as arrogant? (I’d rather be regarded as arrogant than deluded.)
Chablis (the proper Chablis, FROM the Chablis region) not the fake stuff that is made in the US (or USED to be made in Australia) is 100% Chardonnay.
Now, in the USA most of what is ‘labelled’ Chablis is any white wine as the French appellations are not enforced, but this is regarded around the rest of the planet as wrong (and laughable). In much of the US for instance, ‘Burgundy just means red wine’. (Unless it’s imported). That being said, even fine wine merchants in the USA still make the ““I hate Chardonnay but I LOVE Chablis!” joke.

@lady: “…Yes, rice does plug people up. White, long, and wild (which some say isn’t really rice)”
Honestly, I’m not writing this to be arrogant, it’s just that it’s so frustrating that people continue to believe things that are wrong. Biologically (no matter if we have IBS which I do) rice can’t GIVE you constipation. But as I’ve stated before in this thread, if one is ALREADY constipated, adding more fibre can be an issue as it can make a ‘bigger plug’ rather than aiding bowel movements as it normally would.
My position is that all grains are potential gut irritants and should be eliminated.
But they don’t CAUSE constipation. No matter how different your individual biology may be.

I didn’t pretend as if I didn’t make any offence. It was always possible that offence might be taken – even though the notion that steak is different from beef is still laughable – what I responded to was that ‘person’ claimed I called them a moron, which I didn’t. I may yet though.

@person:
“…It is true because France does not require 100% Chardonnay grapes to be considered a TRUE Chablis…”
No,it’s NOT. All wine from the Appellation of Chablis and labelled as such are required by law to be 100% Chardonnay. This is STRICTLY controlled. You may be confused by the labelling system in the US for locally made wines, where something that is labelled Chardonnay, (or merlot, etc) can contain up to 25% of other grapes. Anything more and you’re required to name the blend. i.e. Sémillon Sauvignon, of Chardonnay Sémillon.
And I wasn’t a somolier (you mean sommelier). Sommeliers are twats. I was a wine consultant in a fine wine merchant, speaking almost daily with winemakers.

Aahh, just noticed ‘person’ wrote:

Seems they didn’t properly read my initial post (the one that got them all worked up)
as I stated, pretty clearly:
(2) If you have IBS or similar issues, cut out ALL grains, and dairy for a month (basically, go ‘Paleo’) and see how good you feel after 30 days.
Just in case ‘Person’ isn’t too sure, rice is a grain, and therefore, based on my initial comment, I’m clearly anti rice. So how could I have ‘just about killed her?’.
Now, I’m anti-rice, not because it causes constipation (which it can’t – no food can) but because rice (like all grains) contains protease inhibitors (anti nutrients) that irritate the gut, interfere with the proper digestion of proteins and basically make us ALL sick (to varying extents of course).
This is the book I wish you’d all get. If you don’t have it, you’re missing out on the best possible resource for dealing with (and possibly curing) your gut woes.
It’s called The Paleo Diet Solution by Robb Wolf. It’s a BRILLIANT and quite fun book.

Do you mind if I quote a couple of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your blog? My website is in the exact same niche as yours and my users would genuinely benefit from a lot of the information you provide here. Please let me know if this ok with you.
I hear conjac root is good for constitution.
I’m disgusted at the folks bickering back and forth on here about wine and beef!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
Grow Up!
To the person who started this blog, I want to Thank You, for helping give a lot of very helpful information. And giving me this chance to help my 15 year old, as he’s suffering Greatly after a long camping trip this summer and starting school! He’s having a rough time getting back on schedule with bm’s!
I think much of what I’ve read on here was Extremely Helpful, Minus the childish people, who forgot what this blog was meant to be about!
Thanks Again, to the creator & to all those who stayed on the real topic that mattered!
Screw you, Nicci. Anybody comes at me, and I will go right back at them. That includes you, too. You’re so disgusted with the bickering, but quick to join, aren’t you? By calling other people names and getting involved?
So what are you gonna do now? Shut up and walk away? Or be childish?
Or, claim that you have better things to do and that you are a grown up, and et cetera, even though you know you are responding just to get into other people’s arguments.
Okay, mature person, go away and stick your obtuse head in the sand. Pretend you are too cool.
Obviously, I struck a nerve!
LOL!
I’m not too cool…
And I don’t call names nor attack those lookin for help!
I said ppl off topic on here were acting childish, that rubbed you the wrong way.
I Am Sorry…
And I have better things to do with my time, but if you want to attack me at least be Big Enough to use your real name like I did mine.
Your outbust shows a lack of maturity, in itself.
I don’t run & I hide, but I also will not allow myself to be attacked by ppl like yourself, that have nothing Better to do with their time but sit around on blogs attacking ppl…
Maybe its your way of “going Postal”!
Get some Help for yourself or at the very least an enema to rid yourself of the poison spewing out of your disguisting mouth, instead of your Ass!!!
I DON’T RUN & I *DON’T* HIDE…
The only reason I used this name was so you’d know who I am.
Still, you did call us names, and I did not start our argument. But I’m not gonna stand back and let you or the other guy attack me, which you did.
Struck a nerve? No, just pointing a fact that for someone who’s so against the behavior on this board, you are sure quick to act just the same. You’re telling me that you are too dense to see that your post was just as bad as ours?
Really… What a joke. hahaha.
And really, you’re so against the behavior board, what are you doing now? You’re participating in your own tirade against me. What does that make you? It makes you the same person that you were complaining about in your first post. You are childish and retarded, lol.
To avoid IBS and any other related diseases, installing a toilet bidet at home will be better. I have one from http://products.mercola.com/toilet-bidet/ It’s a bit pricey but it’s worth all the benefits.
Haha @person you make me laugh so silly and childish, I find laughing helps my cramps (sounds weird) & anything fried kills my tum!! Good luck to the people who suffer bc it is no fun!
Haha… So much for your maturity – there it goes. Name calling and all.
Yes, you must not be used to having consequences to your actions. I guess, in your private world, you can take jabs at people and they will just walk away. It must get lonely in your private little world, all alone.
You might as well just get a gun and shoot yourself. It must really suck for your friends and family to have someone, like you, in their life.
hahahahahah…. Funny – I’m laughing too!!!
I have read something about COCONUT FLOUR; that it is high in fibre but very low in carbs. It is supposed to be very good at helping with digestion and promises to help with constipation. I am going to get some tomorrow and do some baking with it to see it helps. Here’s hoping!! BTW I agree about the whole grains etc. Many sites tell you; if only you would eat lots of fruit n veg, fibre & water and stop eating so much junk food, fatty food, refined flours and get plenty of fluids then everything will be fine. Ha. This must be written by people who have never had severe constipation (or any constipation). Well I eat very healthy according to the above so why am I still constipated ?? lol I have been eating ginger and that has helped a bit, also dandelion and artichoke herbs. I don’t know if I have IBS tho’ just unexplained constipation. Here’s a link to where I read about the coconut flour: http://www.imperfectlynatural.com/_webapp_1220204/TIANA_Organic_Coconut_Flour?A=SearchResult&SearchID=97747&ObjectID=1220204&ObjectType=35
There are many good herbal products to prevent constipation. I tried many medicines, but without result. Then, I came across http://www.constipationremedies.ca and everything changed. This product is 100% herbal and does not irritate the stomach, which cannot be said for most synthetic laxatives. But most importantly, resolve my problem with constipation.
I couldn’t believe it when I read this article–less than 3 bowel movements per week is considered constipation?!?!?!?
God, I should be so lucky. I would be THRILLED to have 3 bowel movements in a week.
It’s more like 1 every 2 or 3 weeks if I am lucky.
In the past, it’s been due to food allergies (I’m allergic to dairy, corn and orange, which rules out a lot of Metamucil type fibre supplements for me, and obviously I cannot eat probiotic yogurt), now, I’m on a number of medications that cause it.
But I’ve always had that problem, in varying degrees. Before my allergies were diagnosed I had a test of my intestines and colon, and they gave me some potent laxatives and a drink (probably magnesia type but it was a long time ago and I don’t remember exactly). They did absolutely nothing. The woman where I was going to get the test done just stared at me and said something along the lines of what I had taken was the equivalent of a bomb going off in my intestines, and should have cleared me right out.
The test didn’t do much, other than let me know I have a longer-than-average intestine.
I’ve tried beneful and flax oil, which used to work, (the flax oil did, beneful as far as I can tell did nothing) but no longer does I guess because of the meds. The only things that seem to help are raisin bran (if I eat 2 humongous bowls, it will take about 2 days, and I have to continue to eat more because it doesn’t clear me out entirely) and green tea seemed to help when I was drinking it 4 cups a day. Exercise sometimes helps, but not always. But sometimes I get sick of having to eat raisin bran every day. (And there is only one kind I am not allergic to.) I drink plenty of water usually because I exercise–but unless that’s combined with raisin bran it really doesn’t help.
I don’t have an answer besides the couple of things I’ve mentioned seem to work for me… On the other hand I’m kind of at a disadvantage due to my allergies… But I just had to say something because I couldn’t believe that first sentence… wow.

Very interesting reading here. I found this website while searching for ways to relieve constipation related to a sluggish gall bladder. I have found that my problem, as many others have, is that I eat all the “right” foods – fresh veggies, grains, lean protein, etc. drink water and I work out 4-5 times a week, yet I still have slow plumbing. My gall bladder is stingy in producing bile, and this leads to constipation (normal BM about 2x week). I am 47 years old and now have figured out that another contributing factor was a lactose intolerance. I used to drink milk with almost every meal, but a few years ago started getting a lot of bloating and gas, so I did some research and cut out dairy products and am about 75% better. Seems that your body can eventually stop tolerating foods that you have always eaten.
Now I’m about to try cutting out grains for a month and see how that works. The process of elimination of certain foods from my diet seems to be the most effective way to find out what I cannot tolerate. I avoid medications whenever possible and tend to try natural remedies in all instances before seeking medical intervention because I have read so many horror stories of conditions worsening because the “treatment” is so harsh and causes more problems than it relieves.
Oddly enough in my experimentation I have found that GREEN bananas have helped me to eliminate. Ripe bananas are no help at all, but eating a green (just barely yellow) banana or two each day softens my stool and stimulates passing for me. I had never noticed the correlation because I was not a big banana fan, but one day I read an article about someone being picked up for smuggling and they had ingested something (don’t recall the item) and the police fed them green bananas to make them pass the object. I tried eating green (just barely turning yellow) bananas and wouldn’t you know it worked for me?! If they are still so green that you cannot peel them, then wait a day or so. Ultra-green bananas upset my stomach, so there’s a small window of “eatability” on bananas for me. Once they fully ripen to yellow I don’t eat them. Hope this helps!
Guess I should clarify one thing…my gallbladder is slow in releasing the bile, which leads to the constipation. It’s the liver that actually produces the bile, not the gallbladder. If you have ongoing constipation, especially if it is associated with weight gain and you are female, do have your liver and gallbladder functioning checked.
You know I thought to that I was eating really well. But I was actually eating the wrong food combinations. I tried this 4 day trial and it changed everything. I also purchased there probiotics as there counter ones made my bloat so much and I still take them and i have no bloating. When I first started I realeased so much air. Unbelievable. Now I want others to experience the great I did for myself. No harm in looking. The right food cominations is free 4 day trial and the probiotics well it has more benifits in it then others I have seen. I spent 4 years searching and I am back to my old self now. No harm in reading about it

@TXlady, I did a little research on bananas. Unripe bananas are high in tanin ( used to tan animal hides ) which is constipating. As a banana ripens, the level of tanin decreases. A ripe banana has pectin, fructooligosaccharides and resistant starch to promote elimination. A green banana therefore should be constipating but it relieves constipation for you. After reading the long list of comments here, I have to say your case amazes me. You bile situation makes you unique.
I have horrible constipation. I don’t go number 2 for 2-3 weeks, and then I have horrible diarrea. I eat tons of fiber: 5 WHOLE fruits a day, 2-3 veggies, and only whole grain bread. I don’t think fiber works for me.
Abby, I think you should be eating 2-3 fruits and 5 servings veges. Sometimes I eat too much fibre and not enough water. Are you drinking 1.5 to 2 litres water a day.
For the moment though I would buy prune juice and warm it up and drink that. It will make you go. Definately should.
Hello all,
I was writing an article on foods that can help elimination, and stumbled upon this site…wow, there are a lot of folks needing help!
I’m a certified herbalist and also work with a midwife regularly, and thought I could share a bit of information with you all.
Over 90% of our diseases, including IBS, Crohn’s, and constipation, come from our intestinal tracts unhealthy state. Look at our diets today…full of white flour that acts like a glue in your intestine, white sugar that leaches minerals from your bones, and a bunch of processed food that does nothing but give you too many calories. Now I know some of you say that you have tried a wholistic approach, but if you are not actively cleaning out your colon, the good veggies and fruit will do you hardly any good. I do not recommend using drugs and medications for an intestinal cleanse–they often only serve to tear up your system. Instead, what you want is to supply your body with the foods that it needs to rebuild and cleanse itself. The program that I am most familiar with implements taking wholesome, safe herbal supplements, plenty of water (more on that in a moment), and a wholesome diet. Any one of these alone will not solve the problem. Another point I should make is that these issues take months to resolve, once you are on the right track. It is hard to peel off all the accumulated junk in your colon and rebuild the intestinal walls in just a few days–we are looking at several months. Not to say that you will begin seeing results probably within a week (everyone is different)! Just don’t expect such a program as this to work immediately and cure all your problems in a couple days!
Another thing, “plenty of water” should mean around your body weight in ounces of water. This makes a huge difference in all areas of health.
For a quick fix for constipation, you might try drinking a big glass of hot “honeygar”–a drink made of hot water, raw apple cider vinegar, and raw honey. 8 oz. hot water, 1-2 T. RAW apple cider vinegar, and honey to taste (at least 2 T.!)
Hope this helps at least one person. If anyone would like more information, please leave a comment and I will get back to you soon!
God bless you all,
Steph
Something very simple I’ve found is reducing carbohydrate intake. Here’s a paper from a medical journal that related IBS (and possibly IBD) symptoms to carbohydrate malabsorption:
“One theory related to IBS (and inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]) suggests that symptoms may be at least in part related to impaired absorption of carbohydrates. The theory holds that fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) in patients with IBS or IBD enter the distal small bowel and colon where they are fermented, leading to symptoms and increased intestinal permeability (and possibly inflammation)”
Reference: Gibson PR and Shepherd SJ, Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2005;21(12):1399., “Personal view: food for thought–western lifestyle and susceptibility to Crohn’s disease. The FODMAP hypothesis.”
I’ve visited your site several times and really appreciate the work you’ve done. Such a serious issue it’s great to see others communicating very practical information. I have a product but I won’t use this space to promote my own product. I respect your space and your great website!
I have had ibs for over 10 years now and i must say im at the end of the rope
. I cant imagine doing this for another 45 years. We need to raise awareness and money. We need more advocates. Any ideas?
Steve,
If you have a product that truly works, why would you not want everyone to know about it. It seems a little selfish to keep it to yourself especially in this forum.
Have to share my excitment at discovering porridge! I eat a bowl of porridge oats (not the instant kind) made with water and a dash of milk every morning and after years of problems (since I was about seven) I am now going regularly every day. It is fantastic, and it also feels as though it is cleaning out the system. Try it.
Drink Plenty of water 7-8 liter a day
